Magic Monday Recap #19

So what have you missed if you haven’t played Magic in the last week?  There were lots of opportunities, and lots of ways to get involved!

Most notably we have back Snape!  (As long as I didn’t upset him too much with building a “Paul”-type deck.)

Snape came back with quite a bang too.  He came prepared with some powerful new decks.  His Fungal Forest deck has seen a re-birth and makeover, and can dish out some serious weenie/plant beatdown.  A green deck called his Garruk deck has some serious fire power.   Snape also has a crazy Eldrazi deck that spits out giant Eldrazi creatures like a weenie deck.

Chris, Paul and I participated in a draft at a local card.  The draft was from Scars of Mirrodin.  Chris did not fare well with his Red burn deck going 0-3, Paul pulled out a victory against a kid to go 1-3 and I ended my matches 2-2 beating both Chris and Paul!  It was fun, and nice to see some of the competition from a different perspective. Afterwards Paul and Chris drowned their sorrows in some beer while I offered consoling words to ease the pain.
Saturday we played a ton of casual games.  Don, Paul, Snape and I were all participating in the evening’s festivities.  We played most of the night trading off heads-up play switching opponents when we could.  There were quite a few games play.  Don came prepared with a newly constructed green and white deck loosely based off of the draft deck he made, but fleshed out and primed for some quick beat-down.

Don ended his night 5-8 in heads-up matches and 0-3 in our 4 way games.  That is a nice start for the first week of constructed.  So if you are playing Don, be prepared for a tough match.

On Saturday, before Halo had to go to bed, we were able to get in a Prismatic game where 5 players each play a single color and in order to win the game you have to destroy both of your enemy colors.  Halo played mono-blue.  Don played Mono-black.  Snape played mono-red.  Paul played mono-green.  I played with mono-white.

The game started out slowly with each person taking their time trying to ratchet for positions.  Don seemed to gain a nice strong position early on, while Paul was putting plenty of creatures out, but with Red and Black at his throat they didn’t stay on the battlefield for long.  I had plenty of land, but not a lot to show for it.  By turn six Snape had an Inferno Titan out and started wrecking things.  I made a bad play and put some defender walls out rather than conserve land and play an oust on the Titan, because I had 18 life and felt confident with that.  Snapes next turn ended my life in one attack from the Titan.  Then he just pumped his Titan at Halo and destroyed.  Don and Paul could only watch as Snape decimated his enemies and won the game in relatively easy fashion.

I’m sure Paul’s favorite game of the night was me playing Snape’s fungus deck, with my infinite turn deck and Snape yelling something about playing a real deck not a Paul bullshit deck and storming out of the basement and disappearing for awhile only to reappear upstairs in the form of a calamity.  Rattling of the door, the knob slamming onto the floor above our heads and rolling around the door slamming s shattering sound, and quick-paced footsteps all led Paul to have to excuse himself from the game to investigate what was going on upstairs.  Basically it boiled down to:  Snape’s back!

Overall Saturday was an extremely fun night.

Paul also invited everybody to come over on the normal Monday night to play but only Chris was available.  I got off from work earlier than I expected to and decided to swing by after work and was able to join Chris and Paul to get some nice multiplayer action in.  Chris did quite well with his mono green Eldrazi ramp deck, winning two of the games we played and leaving Paul a husk of his former self.

My favorite moment was watching Paul complain about land issues for many games only to finally count the land in his deck to discovery he was playing 18 lands in a 60 card deck.  At first he decided to just leave it, but after more land issues he conceded and finally added more land by 4 and the next game he had too much land for the first time in the evening.  Maybe you had to be there…

Things I learned in the past week about Magic:
  • Most people hate losing to Infect/Poison, and that makes me want to build it even more.
  • Paul is really good at beating children at the FNM events.
  • Chris has extremely good luck when buying booster packs and nabbing Mythic Rares.
  • Buying a case of boxes is WAY better than buying single boxes!
  • Friday Night Magic is not as fun as playing with friends, but is certainly interesting.
  • It’s good to have Snape back!  Snape adds a flavor to the game that only Snape could provide.
  • Lowell is a chili connoisseur.
  • Playing land destruction is brutal.
  • I can believe someone who made a deck called Testicles of Agony can complain about a creature-based deck!
  • Inferno Titan is wicked awesome.
Paul is out of town soon until next Tuesday.  I am available this Saturday, or on Tuesday for playing some constructed.

What is everybody’s availability?

I know Chris cannot play on Saturday because he has a show at the Comet (which we are all invited to attend!)  But my availability is limited due to my schedule right now.

Can everyone get back about this so we can get together?

Let me know!

Wow!  Next week is 20!
