Recap #23 Combining Saturday & Monday

On occasion I seriously have felt like this person in the picture when playing Magic. This past Saturday was one such occasion. That is not to say I played horrible, I just got outplayed by other people playing better. I loved it. I also hated it, but I loved it a little bit more than I hated it. The pressure is mounting and the competition is growing and the skills are becoming sharper and the decks are becoming deadlier. I find myself going back to the drawing board. I find myself wanting to scrap decks I have had for many months and try new strategies and new archetypes. I must curb those feelings and stick to what I have. The time and energy put into play-testing. The small tweaks, the ups and downs of different builds. Making a move here and making the deck more efficient, or making a move there and finding that suddenly the mana curve has made me consistently miss a play on turn three. These are reasons to love this game. It is a game, and it is more than that because it sticks with you afterward. It is like an ocean, constantly moving and evolving, never looking the same twice. Our decks act in this way. We bring something to the table and play it and the next week people have brought something new to the table to combat what had been done the previous week, and the cycle continues week in and week out. It is maddening. Which is why, as I mentioned, I sometimes feel like the person in that picture.
Take the first game of the night. We played a FFA game that we had never done before in our group. A game with 6 players all going for one another. No order, only chaos. Starting with Halo the game flowed to Paul, Snape, me, Don and Xiao. Halo was playing his Stormtide Leviathan deck, which never saw the table. Paul was playing his Giddy Up deck. Snape was playing his eldrazi Not of This World deck. I was playing my Vampirehouse-5 deck. Don was playing his newly constructed When Elves Attack, and Xiao was playing his new Unnamed blue control deck. The game was quite intense, and locked up. I was the most aggressive initially taking pot-shots at Paul until he condemned my Bloodghast. Halo was aggressive as well taking shots at me until a new threat in the form of Snape reared its head. Everyone was focused on everyone, and no one was gaining an upper hand. I was slowly building up creatures and waiting until I had five to take control of stuff with my captivating vampires. Snape was building up land to throw down some of his eldrazi creatures. Don was patiently biding his time with Mimic Vats lined up in front of him, and Xiao and Halo were slowly building some defense. Paul seemed to be able to keep nothing out on the battlefield as everything he played was destroyed or bounced. Then Snape opened the flood gates when he Exsanguinated everyone for 9 life. Suddenly Snape had over 50 life points and everyone was looking at everyone else with a shell-shocked look. I felt okay with my life link vampires and the Feast of Blood I had in my hand, but no one else was really looking at ease with the situation and many people were under 10 life now. The next turn Snape dropped a bomb onto the field. A giant eldrazi, which I promptly took control of with my vampires, and then the battlefield was promptly cleaned up by Paul with a Day of Judgment, which Don promptly took advantage of by gaining control of all the creatures he could onto his Mimic Vats, counting three deep. The eldrazi was one of them. Then Halo came out of no where and kept the game alive by bouncing the Mimic Vat with the eldrazi back to Don's hand. The game looked locked down again. Halo was taking some initiative and was poisoning Xiao with an islandwalk creature. Xiao had a new clear and present danger which took him out of my radar while he had to focus on Halo. Snape was looking dangerous and untouchable with all of that life, an probably sitting on another exsanguinate in his hand too. Don was still sitting around watching his Mimic Vats harvest the dead, and Paul was still waiting for his chance to get something onto the battlefield that could do something for him rather than for someone else. I had rebuilt my vampire army again and now had Kalastria Highborn out too. Xiao was nearly dead from Halo when he mounted a defense. Paul was down to his final couple of life points and Don and Halo were getting near death. I was inching my way back towards 20 life thanks to more condemns and a vampire nighthawk. The battle was getting fierce and the game was nearing 2 hours in length. Paul succumbs to lethal damage, Xiao was unable to fend off Halo's relentless assault. Don looked from Halo to Snape to me. Snape looked at his beer. I looked from Don to Don's Mimic Vats, to Halo, to Snape to my 1 card in my hand. Halo was looking at the ceiling. The politicking was becoming serious as Don was assuring me that an alliance would lead to good things and surely not to betrayal. He pointed out Snape and his ridiculous amount of life. Snape seemed to enjoy people pointing out how much life he had. Halo wanted to make sure that everyone knew how little of a threat he was, and Don responded by assaulting Halo all out and smashing him good. Halo was stunned! And dead. Snape was unmoved by the event and played another eldrazi. I shored up my defense preparing for an eldrazi assault. Don and Snape and I were entrenched. I was trying to attack Don who was at a very little amount of life. I even tried to kill my own creatures to use Kalastria's ability to do direct damage but he was able to gain just enough life. Then I finally caught him with not enough mana! I was able to get just enough damage to him, but the sacrifices cost me against Snape. Snape was plowing into my health and I was throwing everything I could to defend against his assaults. The battle had boiled down to Snape against me, and I was sure I could draw into more creatures and hold him off. I started picking off his life 9 points at a time, but then he played exsanguinate again and gained a chunk back taking me down again. Then Baneful Omen hit the table, and spelled my doom. It whittled me down each turn until I was dead. I sat there defeated. It was almost worse to make it through that whole game to the bitter end, and then lose than to have been knocked out early. I felt a bit of envy for Paul who surely knew he was done for and wanted to play the spoiler as much as he could. It was Snape's day. Snape walks away with a victory in what may have been our most epic battle we have had in our playgroup.

On the other side of things we were able to play a large amount of heads-up play. Don licked his wounds from the FFA game and came back to play 1 on 1 with his new Green and White deck, and went undefeated in Standard play. He took out Paul's Giddy Up, and Xiao's control deck and my white infect deck Parody of Parity. He was unstoppable. His only defeat was to Snape who was not playing a standard deck and was able to ravage Don for two wins.
Xiao did very well with his new deck as well in heads-up play, getting 4 wins and 4 losses.
Paul and I had our butts handed to us, except when we played each other and then it was just me getting my butt handed to me.
Don stepped up on Saturday as the new hot hand in our standard competition, but then Monday brought Chris and his Face Destroyer deck which also went undefeated on the night in heads-up play. It took home 7 wins. So who will emerge next week to come out the big winner for the week? Will someone be able to give Don and Chris a slice of humble pie? Will Don and Chris battle?
Monday was filled with more FFA action.

Halo, Paul, Chris, Snape and possible new recruit Tim battle in 3 5-way battles. Halo was the victor in the first melee, while Chris and Paul drew final blood in the next two. The games were long and arduous. The competition was stiff and every game was an unknown with no clear winner until the end.
The heads-up action was dominated by Chris, with nobody able to stop him.

Between Don and Chris, I don't know if we have ever had such dominating performances with one deck on any given night in standard play. The only thing that comes close was Lowell's deck So Fast which went undefeated in our single-deck tournament.

The last couple of months playing Magic have taught me a lot about myself and my play style and abilities. I have found myself building and re-building decks during the week before I ever get to play them live. I have built countless prototypes, only to take them back apart and scrap them altogether. I do this because I am forced to, and I am forced to because of the members in our group. The group is gaining greater and greater ability, and the challenge for each of us is growing higher and higher the more experience we all gain. In a slight amount of irony, when Paul told me that I should have my deck by called Parody of Parity, I thought it silly. Now I find that it was prescient. I do not know if he felt a change in the air, or if he just found it funny; I do know that it was a moment that I will note because that deck is a symbol for me now in more ways than one.
The history of our group is short as of now, but the experienced and knowledge gained in that time is tremendous. There is a lot to learn about this game and the archives of data are overwhelming, but the people who came to our group green, have ripened into mature and well-developed players.
I am proud of this group, and I am also terrified to bring my decks to play next weekend. (Please reference the picture above again for how I feel.)

It is nice to sit back and reflect on the games we played. Remembering the moves that we make from our opening hand, to the move that spells our disaster or outlines our victory. Each battle is different. Each game feels new.

Take a moment now and fall into memory. That is where you will learn the most about this game.

James Gives You the Top 5 Mirrodin Besieged Cards

This card will see play in all formats in some capacity. Board sweeping cards are invaluable, and this has the potential to board sweep and knock out those pesky indestructible creatures that previously avoided board clearing spells.
I imagine that this card is turning pyroclasm into garbage cards the world over. 1 extra casting cost for so much more? Deal.
Previously off-limit black creatures for Doom Blade/Terror spells just got a wake up call.
Good night all of my planeswalking friends. Good night Mimic Vat. I love the versatility of this card.
Infect's new best friend.

What are your top 5?

Mirrodin Besieged Artifact and Land Rares

This is a very good card, and mostly because it is an artifact when it is a creature. I know plenty of people in the world are drooling over this and what they can do with it with the new Tezzeret card. One of the nicer man-lands in awhile.
Artwork-awesome (that is one creepy-ass forest)
This card is certainly interesting. I like it, and then I don't. I'm not jumping on the bandwagon for this land right away as I think it has some potential drawbacks that make it less useful. However played at the right times it can be game changing.
Artwork-awesome. (I love the breakness of it)
Timmy's of the world rejoice. This card is for you. Seriously. This card is going to be abused by counter-generators and proliferating, infinite mana and voltaic keys and crap. Overall I think that the card has some niche potential, and some ability to be abused on a limited set of factors.
Artwork-kind of awesome (though the titan being forged looks a little lame)
This card seriously shits out the thopters. This plus Tezzeret equals ridiculous victories. I don't like this card. I will shatterstorm...I mean creeping corrosion the hell out of it. Overall it is a powerful card and will be used with Tezz.
Artwork-lame (who thought up the color scheme on this?)
Ah good. Another Pro green sword, but now with Pro Black. MY favorite! The discarding bit seems nice, but getting to untap all lands! That is the really nice part. I almost like this sword a little bit more than the body and mind counterpart. Overall, they both scare me and I want to destroy them when I see them in play.
Artwork-ok. (I mean...it's just a flaming sword with weird colors.)
This card wrecks. This card and bouncy goodness, such as Venser are completely insane. I would like to abuse that please.
Artwork-killer bones. (Get it?)
I can't believe this is a card. It's like a living Leyline of Anticipation for artifacts, which is really good. Overall...I will kill a card like this on sight.
Artwork-weird and good (I don't know why it took two people to create it though..)
The power and toughness is certainly secondary to the "each opponent loses 1 life" when drawing a card. Infinite draw combo time. ...just not in standard.
Artwork-odd (Mars Attacks?)
Living Pithing Needle. Need I say more?
Artwork-lame! (it looks more like a dune buggy than a creature.)
Imprint can be good. This card has a lot of potential, but it has some downside too. Decks will have to focus around this card to make it good, which could cost a deck. Sometimes cards seem good but in playing them they fall short. I believe this to be a card in the latter category. Overall I think it has potential, but it will take a while before it is fully untapped.
Artwork-kind of cool. (typical Myr artwork, not too exciting)
I just don't think this card will see a lot of play. It seems ok, but 5 to cast. What Myr card is so good that we need to tutor for it?
Artwork-laughable. (moving on)
This card is sick.
Artwork-a little strange and boring.
I just don't think this card has a lot of potential to be as good as the designers hoped it would be. It seems a little too gimmicky and to play it, a deck needs to be focused on artifact destruction. I don't think that seems wise.
Artwork-cool and lame simultaneously?? yes.
A mysterious card with vast powers, and untapped truths. I want to play this card so terribly, but I'm scared at what I may learn.
Artwork-freaking awesome.
This card is wicked. Poison, mill and direct damage all at the same time? Seriously? I would have been fine with just the milling and direct damage. The poison just seems overboard. Overall I think it has some niche market in decks.
Artwork-striking but not too cool. (purple webs are a little lame.)
It seems like there are better ways of doing indestructibility. Though I suppose this is just one more option. Good equipment cards are so hard to come by.
Artwork-lame (how do I draw armor that looks indestructible? Oh I know...I'll just draw little floating lights around it. That should get the point across.)
These living weapons are not too impressive. Though this one does have a nice ability for it's equipped bonus. Kind of like the equipment version of a Lhurgoyf card.
Artwork-forgettable
Well at least there is a reason to build decks around Shape Anew now.
Artwork-silly. (seriously? what the hell does his left arm do anyway?)

That's all of the rares. Not too shabby for a smaller set. Some good additions to the standard mix, and I'm pretty sure the Timmy, Johnny and Spike in all of us have been satiated.

So what exactly are the best five cards of the set?

Mirrodin Besieged Green and Multi-Color Rares

Wow. Tezzeret really looks like he has seen some better days in his existence. Though, his new abilities are by far, a lot better than his previous. His ultimate ability has some serious wrecking power to it. I don't know if I plan on using this card, but it is a card that will get used. Overall I am impressed with the design of the only planeswalker that was added to the mix. I think it has nice synergy with the block, more than previous planeswalkers, and I think it might be one of the better planeswalkers in standard.
Artwork- ridiculously awesome (if Arnold looked like that in the terminator movies they would have been terrifying.)
Glissa has really let herself go since the last time we saw her. And she apparently really likes snakes or wurms. Either that or she has grown into a snake/wurm-like thing. I really can't tell. What I do know is that he ability is very good and will be abused and exploited regularly. Her casting cost of GBB seems like a bargain as well considering she has first strike and deathtouch along side her other ability. Overall I think this is a powerful card that will pick up steam as the new Mirrodin block takes over standard.
Artwork- WTF?
The last troll? That just seems silly. Thrun however is not so silly. For 2GG you can have a 4/4 regenerating beast that has "troll" shroud, which is way better than regular shroud. I don't have much to say. It's a very good card.
Artwork-Very good (but they did depict Thrun to be like the troll version of Yoda.)
This card seem RIDICULOUS.
Artwork-pretty cool (what are those creepy dudes doing, and why does the artist just have one name?)
At 3GG casting cost, this card is a bargain! Although the card needs to be used quickly and efficiently to be effective. I think a lot of mono-green infect decks will focus around this card, as well as the green/red and green/black infect decks. Overall it is a nice card for infect to have.
Artwork-laughable. (seriously? that thing does not look scary.)
The last Zenith card. So what is not to like. You pay the mana, search your library and play the creature out of the library for it's casting cost plus 1. And it doesn't even have to be in your hand! That's sick! Overall it is a very powerful card. It will be used, and it will wreck in games. Does the flavor text hint at the future of Mirrodin?
Artwork-Kind of cool. (I have no idea what I am looking at though)
Shatterstorm is back. And green now.
Artwork-lame (seriously? put some more effort into it dude! Pasting green texture over your picture does not make it cool.)

Green and Blue seem to get some seriously lame art more than the rest of the colors. It is odd.

Mirrodin Besieged Red Rares

This is one of the better cards in the set. What? Pyroclasm? Never heard of it, why would I care now? This card kills all sorts of creatures that were annoying and just out of range of pyroclasm before. Basically this lightning bolts every creature. Play this with Pyromancer's Ascension? That pretty much kills anything. Oh wait! And it could also do direct damage to all players? Wizards of the Coast really gave Red some beef with this card.
Artwork-epic (I guess that is suppose to be Koth of the Hammer in the picture?)
Nice. A reworked fireball. Maybe it can't split targets like the fireball did, but that wasn't really why fireball was awesome anyway. Besides...this card can exile a creature when it kills it! Plus, it is one of the Zenith cards so it gets to shuffle itself. Which I think is a useful tool. Overall I think this will see play in structures RDW decks.
Artwork-pretty awesome (except for those weird ass goblins, I think I could have done without the comic relief)
The other "hero" of the set. In some ways this hero trumps the White counterpart. It has haste, and a better power, but the real nice part is the preventing weenies from blocking. So that means people are going to be looking for clever ways to drop some blue power drain spells onto the creatures to let through these attackers unchecked. Even without the ability, it is certainly a good card. Overall it ranks as one of the better creatures and a card many people will be using for red aggro decks.
Artwork-boring (I seriously think the artist spent more time on the clouds than anything else, they look really nice.)
The token dragon of the set. At least this dragon has a better boosting ability than the red dragon from Scars of Mirrodin. This can be abused in red/artifact decks to really get a lot of extra bang for that pump of 1R to to X, where X equals the number of artifacts being controlled by the player. Overall it is still a dragon and it costs 5RR, which is 1 more than a lot of dragons. I doubt this will see a lot of decks, but in dedicated dragon decks this may find a niche.
Artwork-badass (the flavor text and the artwork go hand in hand)
People have been drooling over this card for weeks. It is certainly good, but it has limitations. I expect to see this card regularly but I just don't know how sold I am on it. Overall it has a lot of potential to be very dangerous, but at the same time it has the potential to be very bad.
Artwork-weird (it looks like a tick that feeds on electricity instead of blood.)

Red is my least favorite color, which is odd because I think dragons are awesome. I think I just hate when burn spells kill my creatures. I think red got some nice additions, and red will continue to be a contender.

Mirrodin Besieged Black Rares

There are a lot of vampire cards in standard right now that are very good. This is not one of them. The only thing that this card has going for it that sets it apart from many of the vampires in standard is that it flies. The life gain is certainly a cute ability, and worked into the right decks, this could be a cute card. It will just not see any play in standard unless discard becomes a real threat in standard at some point during this block. That seems unlikely.
Artwork-decent. (It's a little dramatic, but the recent vampires have been nice on the eyes.)
Another infect creature in black. A big ass infect creature. It's actually a much safer play than the previous 4cmc infect creature Hand of the Praetors because of it's power and toughness. The drawback on the card seems a little frightening at first but in the right deck this card should smash.
Artwork-kind of shitty. (The first time I saw this creature I thought it was a cow's udder on legs)
Now this is an infect creature. This was a card that was leaked early on as a spoiler, and it did the job because having a creature with Pro red and white and first strike that has infect seems pretty slick. The power and toughness is pretty much standard knight toughness, so even though it seems a bit weak it really is not that weak of a card. Overall I am pleased with this card because it adds a different dimension to the infect decks that will be made.
Artwork-Cheesy in a good way. (It's a stereotype black knight!)
So I am a big fan of ETB effects. Which by default makes me a fan of this card. The 3BBB casting cost seems a little steep, but when there are cards like Mimic Vat that exist in the same block, it seems like a good reason to look past the 6cmc. The secondary ability is also not too shabby. I think when the Titan class goes out of standard this could be a potential replacement for many grave titans. I wouldn't mind getting a couple of these! Overall I think this is a compelling card that may not see much use, but has some practical value.
Artwork-Kind of silly (I'm sure I will be hearing plenty of penis jokes when this card is on the table.)
Another Zenith. Of all the Zenith cards in the set this is arguably the best, though the green Zenith card can make a good argument as well. This may not have the same power for the casting cost that a wrath of god type of card does, but this deals with creatures that are indestructible, and it shuffles itself into the library as well which I think is an underrated aspect of these sorcery cards. Between the Massacre Wurm and this Zenith card, Black got quite a bit stronger in controlling creatures. Sorry indestructible white knight decks. Overall this is a card that will be seeing some play in decks.
Artwork-Badass (it has a little damnation flavor thrown in the background. nice.)

Overall I think Black had some nice additions. I do admit that I have a bias towards black, so that colors my perceptions of these a little bit.

Mirrodin Besieged Blue Rares

A card like this can be abused, and it likely will. This card has the potential to put some pretty wicked things into play at a fraction of what it takes to cast them normally. The 1UU casting cost is a deal, but in order for a card like this to succeed a deck has to be heavily tuned around this card to make sure it draws into something useful, other you just paid 3 mana to put a land into play, which is not terrible, it simply just under-abuses the card's power. Overall I think that some type of rogue deck will come along playing this card and abusing it to get ridiculous creatures or enchantments into play, otherwise it is going to be a card that many people ponder while scratching their heads and wondering how they would use it.
Artwork-Weird. (I don't even really know what I'm suppose to be looking at.)
This is an interesting card. I cannot help but to think that this card is less clever, and more funny. It does not seem to have any particular uses other than hopefully getting to draw three cards or tricking your opponent into giving you a card you want. I think most people would just allow the tutor to happen and not allow the card draw, unless the game was already in control. Overall I am not impressed with the card, but it has its comedic upside.
Artwork=kinda lame. (seriously. The guy is just having a headache. And some old hippy has come to him in a pain-induced vision.)
A card like this will get played. A card like this will get abused, and a card like this will be used in many formats for quite awhile. It has some drawbacks, like its inability to trigger ETB (enter the battlefield) effects when it copies, but it is nice to be able to keep changing into things depending on the need. Overall I think it is a solid card. Surely will be seeing some play time in decks focused on one type of a particular creature.
Artwork=forgettable.
So this card is ridiculous. I can only imagine decks with this and temple bell, howling mine, font of mythos. Good thing it is a mythic rare and the casting cost is hefty. It's still ridiculous.
Artwork=awful, and ugly.
Blue Sun's Zenith is powerful, though maybe slightly less powerful than previously known Mind Spring or many other draw cards, it certainly makes Blue players think twice about it before passing up on it. Looking at the pool of cards in standard there are not that many cards to work in conjunction with this card to make it as powerful as it could be, but there are some that would like to be in a deck together with it. The Psychosis Crawler is pretty much begging to be played with cards like this and Foresee. I'm not a fan of the xUUU casting cost, as it seems a little steep to make it competitive. Though, with a lot of cards that are currently in the Mirrodin Besieged there seems to be a slowing down happening. The cards are getting heavier casting costs for what it is that they are. Overall I think this card will be found in lots of niche casual decks, but not much else.
Artwork=Ok, but a little boring.

Mirrodin Besieged White Rares.

Let's take a look at the rares from the Mirrodin Besieged set. Starting with White we have the White Sun's Zenith, which is one of five Zenith cards. The three base casting cost, WWW won't be much of a problem for people playing this card as this will see play in mono white decks more than anywhere. I think that this is a card that will see lots of play in token abuse decks and mono white EDH decks. The card is certainly powerful, but it lacks the practicality to see competitive play. The added benefit that is most overlooked for these Zenith cards is their ability to shuffle the library. Overall this card has very limited uses, and compared to some of its Zenith brethren it lacks the necessary oomph a great card possesses.
Artwork=awesome.

This angel card has a built in mechanic that pairs with the Mirron Besieged set mechanic: battlecry. This card not only gives attacking creatures flying, but also lifelink. Luckily it has a nice hefty casting cost of 3WWW, which will limit its appearance in most competitive play. It will be a popular casual card, but still in limit use. Compared to other angels of recent sets, this angel is lacking in its own fire power, where Baneslayer and Deathless angel attack for more this scales back to 4 power which is more like the angels of yesteryear. Overall this is a powerful card, but the power given for the mana spent can be too much to make it appear in most decks playing white. Some people are going to add this into battlecry decks, and in Limited this card is sure to be played by anyone who has gotten ahold of one.
Artwork=Drab (I mean seriously, it looks like the angel got TP stuck to its ass when leaving the john.)
This is the mythic rare for White. It is no slouch, and once in play if not dealt with it can wreck an opponent. It has a toughness big enough to stay away from many devastating spells like lightning bolt. The battlecry ability only strengthens it further and makes the demand for this card even higher. Overall this is one of the more powerful cards in the set, and is surely going to be played in aggro decks in competitive standard play regularly.
Artwork=awesome (but that horse thing kind of freaks me out)

This card is a very nice card. It is a little expensive with 4WW for its cmc, but that is a small downside for yet another white board sweeping card. The 2 extra mana paid above the Day of Judgment board sweep is surely justified by the token receive in the form of X power and toughness for each creature killed. Still, I do not think it will see as much competitive play due to the cost of casting the card, and the spell itself will not be a game winner. This will be prevalent in casual decks and especially in EDH decks, which love to grab up any and all board sweeps that they can.
Artwork=badass
The Mirran Crusader is a solid card, and will surely see a hefty dose of play. The protection for black and green is surely a nice benefit for a card like this, but the double strike and 1WW casting cost are what make it so powerful in battle. It will get out early and wreck people. Having a card like this with pro-black/green is useful but it will still take specific deck archetypes to find consistent use for this card. Those limited uses hold this card back, but do not limit it entirely. Overall I am impressed with the card, but not blown away because of the narrow scope it fits into.
Artwork=cool, but cheesey.

Next we can look at the Blue Rares.
